Phishing is widely recognized as one of the most common cybercrime attacks, and many people are subjected to several attempts every day. In fact, according to Forbes, phishing victims lost more than $52,000,000 in 2022. Millions of emails are sent daily attempting to get people to reveal sensitive information that can lead to their identity being stolen or their accounts being compromised. Phishing attempts are often made via phone call or text message, too – which is why it’s so important to stay vigilant in order to protect your personal information. In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, VyStar employees have taken part in activities throughout October that emphasize the importance of keeping personal information secure. And we want our members to be just as knowledgeable. Here are several tips to keep top of mind that can help keep your information safe from phishing attempts online.
Always verify
Hackers and cybercriminals can be extremely savvy – and in a world where people rely on digital communications to stay on top of their finances, it is important to be careful when accessing your account information. It’s not uncommon for scammers to replicate the look and feel of emails and text messages that you might receive from your financial institution, mail couriers or even stores and retailers. If you receive communications about your accounts, you can keep your information safe by:
Double-checking emails and text messages for spelling errors, typos, or other irregularities.
Only accessing your information through your browser instead of any links or attachments shared in those emails and text messages. Even if you trust the sender, log into your account using your browser by going directly to the website to ensure that you aren’t submitting your information to an unverified site.
Pausing to ask a few questions, like whether the message was intended for you, why that information would be needed, and why the request would be urgent.
Block and report suspicious messages
Whether you receive a suspicious message at work or on a personal device, you should always utilize the message reporting feature set up by your company or provider to stop its circulation. Use the reporting feature to alert your service provider or IT and Security departments of potential phishing so that the message is flagged and removed from your inbox. Never forward a suspicious email or message to a colleague or friend for them to take a look, and never click a link or download an attachment from a sender you don’t know or trust. If in doubt, report the message.
Exercise caution on public devices and Wi-Fi networks
While many places such as malls, libraries, cafes and airports may offer a public Wi-Fi option, your information may not be secure when accessed on these networks. Although they are convenient, it’s best to restrict your internet use on these networks.
Avoid logging into work or school-related accounts or any account containing sensitive information while on public networks. Cybercriminals can use these to spoof notifications and software updates that are actually malware. If you have to access sensitive information when you’re away from home, opt to use your phone as a mobile hotspot or use a trustworthy virtual private network (VPN). Likewise, you should avoid accessing your accounts on public or shared devices (such as a tablet or computer at your local library).
