There’s something truly special about the start of baseball season — the energy, the sounds, the smells (yes, I’m talking about hot dogs) and the sense that spring is officially here. I had the chance to attend the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s opening night game at the newly renovated VyStar Ballpark on April 1, and y’all … what a night!
Did you know as a VyStar member we can get $2 off any game ticket and buy one, get one free reserve or general admission tickets on specific games when using your VyStar debit or credit card? Just check out VyStar Perks. When I found that out, I honestly asked myself, “Why don’t I go to more games?” It’s such a fun, easy night out and now I have zero excuses not to be a regular this season … especially after my opening night experience!
From the moment we arrived at VyStar Ballpark, there was a buzz in the air. The stadium looked incredible. It was updated, vibrant and full of that classic baseball charm. I don’t know about you, but there’s something about hearing the national anthem and watching a flyover before the first pitch that gets me every time. It’s like a deep-rooted, all-American tradition you can feel deep in your bones.

And of course, what’s a ball game without the essentials? First thing I did was beeline it for a cold beverage (the custom Shrimp Boat brew from Intuition Ale Works is a must have) and stood in line for a hot dog because, honestly, I don’t think I could enjoy a baseball game without one. Totally worth it every time!
Almost immediately after, we ran into Southpaw and Scampi and they were just as adorable as ever. Mascots are a big part of what makes these games so fun and entertaining, and we have the cutest ones, don’t you think?
One of my favorite parts of the evening was walking the entirety of VyStar Ballpark and realizing how many different vantage points you can take in the game from. We stopped by the Tiki Hut for a drink and got to enjoy a view of the ballpark I’d never seen before. It was such a cool way to take it all in and see how big the field really is. I loved watching the fans from afar, seeing all the team spirit and feeling the hometown pride. And if you're feeling brave, you can even say hello to the outfielder! (Just remember to be polite.)
Another can't-miss addition to the park is the giant "GREETINGS FROM JACKSONVILLE" sign that is just inside the outfield entrance. It's so idyllic it feels like you could be on a postage stamp. The perfect spot to take pictures with friends.

Plus, the turf area is great if you have young Jumbo Shrimp fans with you who need to let out some energy. Speaking of kids, did you know that if it's their first game, you can go to guest services and they will print a certificate for you? What a cool scrapbook item. It's all definitely worth checking out!

And you know I had to stop and shop. I visited both souvenir stores, the one near the seating area and the new one behind the outfield. After browsing around, I finally found some Jumbo Shrimp merch I had to have. By the way VyStar members, be on the lookout for exclusive member sale days at the souvenir shops during certain games. Don’t miss out on the deals!
As the game went on, the excitement only built. Fans were hyped, the stadium was roaring, and then it happened. Heriberto Hernandez hit a grand slam, helping the Jumbo Shrimp secure a 10-5 win over the Worcester Red Sox. What a way to start the season!
So if you want to be a part of all the baseball fun and you’re a VyStar member like me, don’t forget to take advantage of those perks the next time you head to VyStar Ballpark. Between the $2 off game tickets, and select BOGO reserve or general admission when using your VyStar debit or credit card, AND exclusive souvenir sales, there’s no better deals for local, American, old fashion fun!
See you at the next one, only at VyStar Ballpark!
