During the second episode of our VyStar Savings Challenge Spotlights, May Johnson shared that her biggest struggle when it comes to saving is dining out. Turns out, she’s not alone.

In our VyStar Savings Challenge Facebook group, we asked members: If you had to cut back on spending, which would be the toughest to give up? After one day, 43% of respondents chose eating out/takeout —outpacing coffee runs, streaming services and other expenses.

It’s no surprise. Dining out is convenient, and beyond that, it’s often a way to connect with family and friends. The problem? When eating out becomes a habit, it can take a big bite out of your budget.

If you’ve ever checked your bank statement and been shocked by how much you’ve spent on dining out, you’re not the only one. The good news is there are plenty of ways to cut back without completely giving up the experience.

Plan ahead with meal preparation

One of the easiest ways to resist takeout temptation is to have ready-to-eat meals at home. Meal prepping doesn’t have to be complicated — start with a few simple dishes you enjoy. Cooking in batches and storing meals for the week gives you quick, budget-friendly options. If you prepare enough, you can also bring meals for lunch, helping you skip the midday restaurant or food truck stop. Bonus: It’s often healthier!

Recreate restaurant favorites at home

Craving your favorite restaurant meal? Try making it yourself! Many popular dishes have easy-to-follow recipes online. Not only will you save money but also you’ll have control over ingredients and portion sizes. Plus, it can be a fun challenge to perfect a homemade version of your go-to order.

Apps to help: Copy Me That, Tasty and BigOven are options to find and organize recipes.

Split a to-go order with friends

Sometimes, nothing beats food from your favorite spot. Instead of dining in or ordering individually, consider placing a larger takeout order with friends or family and splitting the cost. You’ll still get to enjoy the flavors you love — just at a lower price.

Apps to help: Splitwise makes it easy to divide the cost among friends.

Use dining out as a treat, not a routine

Instead of grabbing takeout multiple times a week, turn dining out into a planned treat. Set a budget for dining out and do your best to stick to it. Cutting back on dining out doesn’t mean giving it up entirely. With a little planning and creativity, you can still enjoy great meals while keeping more money in your bank account.
