Your VyStar Visa® credit and debit cards come equipped with EMV chip technology, which provides you with an extra layer of protection against fraud when you use it at chip-enabled payment terminals and ATMs. This chip produces a one-of-a-kind code every time you complete a transaction, helping to even further reduce the threat of counterfeiters replicating your card’s information.

EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa. An EMV chip card has a microprocessor embedded directly on the front of the card. The chip provides stronger transaction security features and other application capabilities that traditional magnetic strip (i.e., magstripe) cards do not possess. VyStar made the decision to invest in chip technology several years ago, before most merchants and some card processors were making that investment. Although chip cards do not totally eliminate fraud, they provide additional security for our cardholders.

In addition to the traditional magnetic strip that you are used to seeing, the chip provides an extra layer of protection and securely transfers account data from the chip to the merchant through a chip-enabled card reader. EMV is currently the global standard for payment processing that will soon become the standard in the United States. More merchants are accepting chip transactions every day. Whether you check out using chip technology or swipe your card’s magstripe, you can pay wherever Visa cards are accepted.
In 2015, VyStar began upgrading its network of ATMs to include EMV chip card readers. All VyStar ATMs are now EMV-activated.
Over time, you will begin to notice more merchants using chip-activated terminals and ATMs. Effective October 1, 2015, businesses and merchants that do not accept chip card transactions may be responsible for any resulting counterfeit fraud. This deadline was designed to prompt merchants to replace their existing magstripe reader equipment with new chip-enabled equipment in order to take full advantage of the added security that chip cards offer.
After October 1, 2015, if a counterfeit card-present purchase occurs with a chip card because the merchant has failed to upgrade to EMV readers, the merchant—not the bank or credit union issuing the card—will likely be responsible. PLEASE NOTE: This deadline does not affect VyStar members’ ability to use their debit or credit cards with or without chip technology. The liability shift simply helps protect the financial institution issuing the chip card because they have made the investment to better safeguard your transactions. VyStar EMV cards will continue to have both a magstripe and a chip. So whether the merchant is EMV-compliant or still using magstripe card readers, your transactions will be processed.
Automated fuel dispensers (AFDs) and ATM transactions will join the liability shift on October 1, 2017. You will not be able to use the VyStar chip card at unmanned terminals. This will impact some international travelers. Overseas, unmanned terminals typically have low volume and can be found at train stations, bike rental terminals, etc. These unmanned terminals are unable to fully authorize the transaction and only make up approximately 2% of all terminals worldwide, according to Visa.
When you try to swipe the commonly used magstripe at a merchant’s chip-enabled POS terminal, you will be prompted by the terminal to use your card’s chip instead, if it has one. When instructed to do so, follow these general steps:
(Note: If you still have a card without a chip, these instructions do not apply to your card. You can still swipe your chip-less card’s magstripe to complete a purchase at a chip-enabled POS terminal. EMV-activated POS terminals can accept both chip cards and traditional magstripe cards.)
When you insert your chip card as you normally would at the ATM, the machine—if it is chip-enabled—will instruct you to reinsert your card. When prompted to do so, follow these general steps:
Contact VyStar as soon as possible. We will cancel your card and order a new one for you. If you are near a VyStar branch, they can provide you with an instant issue debit card to replace the one you lost. Instant issue credit cards will be available later in 2016.
The PIN issued with your card may be required during a chip card transaction. The same PIN must be entered when an ATM transaction is requested. To change your PIN, please call toll-free 1 (800) 757-9848 for debit cards or 1 (888) 886-0083 for credit cards.
