Preventing Credit/Check Card Fraud

PREVENTING CREDIT/CHECK CARD FRAUD

Take these precautions to protect yourself against credit/check card fraud.

  • Sign your card upon receipt. Sign the signature panel on your credit cards as soon as you receive them and keep duplicates in a safe place.
  • Memorize your PIN. Don’t carry your PIN (Personal Identification Number) in your purse, wallet, vehicle or non-secured place.
  • Verify your card. Be sure your credit card is returned after a purchase, and that it is your card.
  • Wait for you card receipt. Don’t leave your credit card receipts at the checkout counter. Never leave receipts at ATM machines, wickets, in trashcans, or at unattended gasoline pumps. Be sure to tear up any carbons or receipts after they are no longer needed.
  • Save your receipts. Check them against your monthly billing or account statements to make sure you can identify all of your transactions. Report any unauthorized transactions immediately.
  • Check statements and watch your charges. Verify that your monthly statement reflects the amount you authorized. Watch for multiple charges, duplicate charges or unauthorized charges and report any discrepancies immediately.
  • Secure your cards. Never leave your purse or wallet unattended and always keep your cards out of plain sight.
  • Never share your card. Your card is your responsibility. Never lend your card to someone who is not authorized to use it.
  • Keep a list. In a secure and separate location, keep a list of account numbers and telephone numbers to call if your cards are lost or stolen.
