HISTORY Timeline

In 1952, VyStar Credit Union, originally named Jax Navy Federal Credit Union, was chartered at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, and served civil-service and military employees and their families.

By 1957, assets exceeded $1.6 million, membership reached 6,789.

Assets totaled $20.8 million by 1970 and in 1975 the current NAS Jax Branch opened for business.

The current NAS Jax Branch opened for business.

In 1978 the Cecil Field Branch opened and membership reached 64,216.

The Orange Park Branch opened in 1983 and total credit union assets topped $200 million.

The current Roosevelt Branch and VyStar’s former Operations Center (now VyStar’s Call Center) opened in 1986. Membership exceeded 111,000 and assets reached $319.5 million.

During 1987, the original Southside Branch opened and assets reached $343 million.

In mid-1991 $500 million in assets was reached.

Three branches, including Middleburg, Arlington (Atlantic Boulevard), and the current Southside Branch, along with the Orange Park Drive-thru Center were opened in 1995. Assets reached $1 billion in September of 1995.

1997 brought new branches to Arlington (Merrill Road) and Northside, and membership exceeded 200,000.

Branches were opened in Mandarin and Westside in 1998.

During 1999 the new Corporate Headquarters opened in Westside and membership grew to more than 245,000 with assets exceeding $1.7 billion.

The Eagle Harbor Branch opened in 2000 along with the new Arlington Branch in early 2001. During 2001, assets reached over $2 billion.

At the end of 2001 Jax Navy became a state-chartered credit union and dropped “Federal” from its name. It also became the largest state chartered financial institution headquartered in Florida.

In early 2002, approval was received from the State of Florida to open membership to anyone living or working within the five county area including Duval, Clay, Nassau, St. Johns and Baker Counties. At the same time, we retained the ability to serve all the members and groups we had been serving so proudly for many years.
New Jacksonville Beach Branch opened in 2002.

On April 29, 2002 Jax Navy Credit Union celebrated its 50th anniversary and also changed its name to VyStar Credit Union.

Opened membership to new Florida counties, Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Flagler, Marion, Putnam, Union and Volusia.
New Mandarin Branch opened June 23, 2003.
VyStar broke ground for its new Middleburg Branch at 2762 Blanding Boulevard. The full service facility will be completed the end of 2003.
New Macclenny Branch opened August 25, 2003.

New Fernandina Beach Branch opened in 2003.

Opened membership to new Florida counties Gilchrist and Levy.

New Beach & 9A Branch opened August 15, 2005

New Palatka Branch opened January 22, 2007
New Regency Commons Branch opened April 16, 2007 (replaced Merrill Road branch)
New Downtown Branch (moved to Ed Ball Building) opened May 7, 2007
New Bartram Bears Branch opened September 4, 2007 at Bartram Trail High School as part of the VyStar Academy of Business and Finance. This was VyStar’s first branch within a high school – managed and run by students.
New OakLeaf Branch opened October 15, 2007

New Gainesville Branch opened April 7, 2008
New Palm Coast Branch opened July 17, 2008
New Fleming Island High School Branch opened August 19, 2008
New Pedro Menendez High School Branch opened August 28, 2008
New Green Cove Springs Branch opened September 22, 2008
